Winter ‘19 Mentoring Groups

GYM-TO-CRAG 

Who this group is for: You are a competent lead climber in the gym but do not have all the skills you need for climbing outside independently
Learning objectives: Crag ethics and trip planning, necessary gear, cleaning sport anchors
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes

Group leaders: Hayley Boyle and Evan Panek
Meetings: Every second Monday at Go Vertical (Jan 14, Feb 11) and a Cleaning Sport Anchors clinic (taught by AAC) on March 11 at Tufas Boulder Lounge
Trip: Group outing to Birdsboro or Safe Harbor, during the second or fourth weekend in April


INTRO TO MULTI-PITCH TRAD (following) 

Who this group is for: You are interested in trad, but have never followed on gear and do not have experience with multi-pitch climbing.
Learning objectives: Learn about trad gear, trip planning, processes and systems involved in multi-pitch climbing, and learn to be an efficient, safe and helpful partner
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Harness, shoes, helmet, ATC

Group #1
Group Leaders: Derick Lim and Matt Stroebel
Meetings: Every third Wednesday at Gravity Vault Radnor (Jan 16, Feb 20, Mar 20)
Trip: Follow group leaders at the Gunks, second or fourth weekend in April

Group #2
Group Leaders: Kate Otte, Garrett Gibbons and Francesca Cargnin
Meetings: Last Monday of every month at Tufas Boulder Lounge (Jan 28, Feb 25, March 25)
Trip: Follow group leaders at the Gunks, second or fourth weekend in April


BEGIN LEADING TRAD 

Who this group is for: You have followed on gear, and are ready to take the plunge into leading
Learning objectives: Choosing gear for your your rack, trip planning, types of anchors used in trad (not an anchor building course)
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable with lead belaying and catching falls, and rappelling
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes

Group leader: Bob Johnson and Trung Le
Meetings: Third Wednesday of each month at Tufas Boulder Lounge (Jan 16, Feb 20, Mar 20)
Trip: Group outing to Rocks State Park, Ralph Stover or Gunks for mock leads and following, second or fourth weekend in April


INTRO TO WINTER MOUNTAINTEERING

Who this group is for: You want to climb a big peak, but are relatively unfamiliar with the alpine environment, and have little to no experience with ice/snow gear.
Learning objectives: Understanding the gear needed to complete mountaineering objectives, discussing winter hazards and the alpine environment, trip planning and helpful resources
Skill Requirements: Must be ready to sleep in the cold and fit enough to hike for two consecutive days.
Gear requirements: Winter clothes, boots compatible with crampons (no yaktrax), mountaineering ice axe, helmet, some camping gear. We will discuss the gear needed to complete our objective and options for renting or sharing, if necessary.

Meetings: Jan 29, Feb 12, and Feb 26; 7:00pm at Tufas Boulder Lounge
Trip: Dependent upon skill level of group participants; either the Presidential Traverse (White Mountains) or a peak in the Adirondacks, March 15-17
