Fall ‘19 Mentoring Groups

LGBTQIA+ GYM-TO-CRAG (sport leading)

Who this group is for: You are a competent lead climber in the gym and would like to start climbing outside. This group is focused on creating safe spaces for LGTBQIA+ folks as they start leading outdoors; allies are welcome to join
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes
Learning Objectives: Crag ethics, gear, safety/risks of climbing outside, regional climbing destinations, communication, cleaning sport anchors (taught by the AAC Education Team)

Group leaders: Crys Moore and Erin Hurt
Meetings: TBD
Trip: Group outing to Birdsboro or Safe Harbor, during the fourth weekend in October

CLIMBING TECHNIQUES 

Who this group is for: Anyone who wants to improve by learning & practicing specific techniques.
Skill Requirements: Must have some basic climbing skills, preferably climbing 5.8 in the gym or V0/V1 boulders.
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes
Learning objectives: Skills needed for climbing on slab, in cracks, being efficient and improving endurance, and effectively projecting boulder problems. This group will offer interactive feedback and demonstrations; climbing in a group is fun and pushes us to try new things and learn from others. Each week we will meet at a different gym and have a different guest mentor presenting climbing techniques they excel in.

Group leader: Garrett Gibbons
Meets: every 3 weeks; 4 meetings
Trip: Bouldering at Haycock (weather permitting) or at a local gym


INTRO TO MULTI-PITCH TRAD (following) 

Who this group is for: You are interested in trad, but have never followed on gear and do not have experience with multi-pitch climbing.
Learning objectives: Learn about trad gear, trip planning, processes and systems involved in multi-pitch climbing, and learn to be an efficient, safe and helpful partner
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Harness, shoes, helmet, ATC


Group Leaders: Derick Lim and Matt Stroebel
Meetings: Every third Wednesday at Gravity Vault Radnor (Jan 16, Feb 20, Mar 20)
Trip: Follow group leaders at the Gunks, second or fourth weekend in April

BEGIN LEADING TRAD 

Who this group is for: You have followed on gear, and are ready to take the plunge into leading.
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable with lead belaying/catching falls, sport leading, and rappelling. You must have at least 1 year of sport leading experience and some experience following on gear.
Gear requirements: Must own harness, shoes, helmet, ATC
Learning Objectives: Gear, Risks/Dangers, Protection, Trip planning, Communication, Common problems when leading and how to avoid them, Anchor Building (clinic, see trip details)

Group leader: Bob Johnson
Meetings: every 3 weeks; 4 meetings
Trip: Guided anchor building clinic (this is optional for mentees but strongly encouraged. This is coordinated by AACPHL)
