Thanks for your interest in our AAC Philly Chapter Road Trip to The Gunks! Below you'll find all the info you need to have a great time in the Gunks!
The Samuel F. Pryor Gunks Gateway Campground
953 NY-299, Gardiner, NY 12525
Friday June 23rd- Sunday June 25th
We will not be doing any guiding or instructional clinics on this trip. Below you can find info on guide companies and rentals in the Gunks.
As with most popular climbing areas, parking is always a bit tricky at the Gunks, so please carpool.
Camping at the AAC campground is also pretty tight. The tent platforms just barely fit two 3-man tents, and the rest of the ground isn't the flattest in the world. Please bring a reasonably sized tent for your party.
Day passes to the Mohonk Preserve (where the Gunks are located) are not included in the price of the weekend, and cost $20 per day. These can be purchased at the Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center.
A full-access year membership to the preserve is $95. If you enjoy your time at the Gunks, and would like to get a membership, the preserve will credit the cost of your day passes towards your membership if you buy the membership within one week of your day passes.
All participants must sign the online AAC waiver prior to the event. Please fill out this waiver before coming up the Gunks. We use EZ Waiver for all AAC events that include climbing. By creating an EZ Waiver account you'll be able to log in and sign the waiver in seconds for future events.
CHECK IN, SETUP AND BREAKDOWN
Please aim to arrive between 6pm and 10pm on Friday evening. There will be very limited parking at the AAC Campground, so please plan to drop off your gear at the campground and stash your car up the hill at the Mohonk Preserve visitor center. It is a quick walk back the campsites from this lot, but you probably don't want to do it with your arms full.
As stated before tent space is limited and we strongly encourage that you make use of your tent's potential. Please only bring a big 6 person tent if you have 6 people sleeping in it. Feel free to reach out to us and we can hook you up with a tent if you need one. We will be wrapping things up Sunday morning and we ask that everyone be packed up and out of the campground by 11am. You can then proceed to go climb, hike, swim, go out for brunch, or head back to Philly.
The Gunks is exclusively a traditional climbing area. While some routes are mixed and have bolts there are technically no “sport routes” at the Gunks. A majority of the routes require multiple pitches of climbing to reach the top, and rappelling to descend. That being said if you have the skill set and the gear for building top ropes there are plenty of top roping opportunities. There is also some great bouldering to be found along the main carriage road and at some other outlying areas.

FOOD AND DRINKS
We will be providing beer on Saturday night, but we suggest everyone plan on bringing food for the weekend. There is a Shop Rite on your left as you pass through New Paltz on your way to the Gunks.
The Mountain Harbor Deli at the corner of 55 and 299 is a great place to grab breakfast in the morning. It is on the way to the visitor center if you're driving, but adds about 15 minutes if walking.
It can get really hot at the Gunks in June and you should take all the normal precautions for extended exposure to the sun. Bring sunscreen, lots and lots of water, and be mindful of where you climb and how much sun you are getting.
Your Preserve day pass also gets you access to Minnewaska and the Split Rock swimming hole. If the noon day sun starts getting too hot the swimming hole is a great way to spend the warmest hours of the day. Ask our volunteers to point you in the right direction.
The Gunks in the summertime is always bustling with activity so please be mindful of other users such as bikers, hikers joggers and playful children. Sharing is caring!
