Battle of the Blocks Captain Spotlight: Dalea Reichgott

Dalea is a Battle of the Blocks Captain for the West Philly Wallabies! She has been hooked on climbing since summer camp when she was around 7 and is looking forward to bringing all the West Philly climbers together!

When and how did you first get into climbing?
I fell in love with rock climbing at my summer camp, Lohikan, when I was around 7. My first climbing wall was just hunks of wood screwed into a big wall, but I was already hooked. I climbed every summer after that, and really got into climbing more seriously in college, when I lived in Santa Fe. My friends and I would go out almost every weekend and camp and climb in the nearby mountains. Now I coach kids at the Philadelphia Rock Gym in East Falls and climb there primarily, and am looking forward to hitting up the local climbing spots more as it warms up a bit!

What do you like about your neighborhood and what makes it unique?
The rock gym! Really though - I live five minutes away, and it’s great to be able to hop over whenever I want. But on a larger scale, West Philly is a big place which contains all kinds of culture, counter-culture, and greenery. There are great parks, coffee shops, and weird street art. West Philly is a great little microcosm of all the things Philly has to offer.

What do you love about climbing and how do you think this comp is going to bring your team together?
Climbing is a wonderful fusion of physical and mental challenges. It asks us to be our best, but reminds us to be humble. It always has room for you to grow and overcome the you of yesterday. And it’s an amazing way to commune with nature and other dirty hippies! Jk, not all climbers are hippies ;) This comp will be an awesome way for West Philly climbers to get to know each other, build community, and put their skills to the test!
