START CLIMBING OUTSIDE

Who this group is for: You have been climbing in the gym for a while and want to transition to outdoor climbing. Your group will discuss trip planning; grades, styles or skills needed for climbing outside, etiquette, ethics and stewardship; danger and increased risks; and gear.
Skill requirements: Must have been climbing for at least 6 months, must know how to TR belay and have your own harness, ATC and shoes
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes, helmet

Trip: Top Rope Anchor Clinic (full day) at Ralph Stover State Park taught by The PRG Climbing School. This clinic is an additional $144 and is optional for mentees but strongly encouraged. The course is coordinated by AACPHL and more details will be provided after sign-ups.

If you are unsure you can afford the clinic:
We have a need-based partial scholarship program for mentees who want to advance their climbing education but are unable to pay the whole way. More details about how to apply for this scholarship and selection criteria will be provided after sign-ups.

GYM-TO-CRAG
(sport leading) 

Who this group is for: You are a competent lead climber in the gym and would like to start climbing outside. In this group, you will discuss crag ethics, gear, safety/risks of climbing outside and regional climbing destinations with other experienced climbers. One of your meetings will be a cleaning sport anchors clinic, taught by the AAC Education team (included in your registration).
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes
Trip: Group outing to Birdsboro or Safe Harbor

GROUP #1: 🌈 PHLASH edition
Phlash is Philadelphia’s LGBTQIA+ rock climbing community. We offer a safe space for folks new to climbing and for those with experience. We hold regular meetups for climbers of all skill levels at various gyms across the city as well as outside. This version of gym-to-crag will have a sub-focus on creating inclusive spaces for LGBTQIA+ folks outdoors. All are welcome.

CLIMBING TECHNIQUES 

Who this group is for: Do you wish you could stick to slab, enjoy and crush an offwidth, improve endurance and project a boulder problem like a pro? This group is for anyone who wants to improve by learning & practicing specific techniques.  This group will offer interactive feedback and demonstrations; climbing in a group is fun and pushes us to try new things and learn from others. Each week we will meet at a different gym and have a different guest mentor presenting climbing techniques they excel in.
Skill Requirements: Must have some basic climbing skills, preferably climbing 5.8 in the gym or V0/V1 boulders.
Gear requirements: Belay device, harness, shoes
Trip: Bouldering at Haycock/Governor’s Stable

INTRO TO TRAD (following)

Who this group is for: You have sport climbed outside and are interested in trad, but have never followed on gear and do not have experience with multi-pitch climbing. You want to talk to experienced climbers about gear, trip planning, communication and learn how to be a safe and helpful partner.
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable lead belaying and catching lead falls
Gear requirements: Harness, shoes, helmet, ATC
Trip: Follow group leaders in the Gunks

BEGIN LEADING TRAD

Who this group is for: You have followed on gear, and are ready to take the plunge into leading. You will discuss racking gear, trip planning, risks and dangers, route reading, communication, and problem solving. This group ends with an anchor building clinic.
Skill Requirements: Must be comfortable with lead belaying/catching falls, sport leading, and rappelling. You must have at least 1 year of sport leading experience and some experience following on gear.
Gear requirements: Must own harness, shoes, helmet, ATC
Trip: Trad Anchors Clinic at the Gunks (full day) taught by Alpine Endeavors.
This clinic is an additional $150 and is optional for mentees but strongly encouraged. The course is coordinated by AACPHL and more details will be provided after sign-ups.
